Gikas A. Hardouvelis
Gikas A. Hardouvelis, www.hardouvelis.gr, a former Finance Minister of Greece, is Professor of Finance & Economics in the Department of Banking & Financial Management of the University of Piraeus. He has served the Hellenic Republic from the position of Finance Minister in the Antonis Samaras government from June 2014 to January 2015, and as Director of the Economic Office of Prime Minister Lucas Papademos from November 2011 to May 2012 and Prime Minister Constantinos Simitis from May 2000 to March 2004.
He holds a Ph.D. degree in Economics from U. C. Berkeley (1983) and M.Sc. & B.A. degrees in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University (1978). He has been Assistant Professor at Barnard College, Columbia University (1983-1989), AssociateProfessor and subsequently Full Professor at Rutgers University (1989-1993). Hardouvelis is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Harvard Association and the Board of Trustees of Anatolia College, his high school Alma Matter. He is also member of the Academic Council of CIIM in Cyprus, as well as Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London and the Centre for Money, Banking and Institutions, Surrey Business School.
Hardouvelis has extensive central banking experience, at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 1987 to 1993 and the Bank of Greece from 1994 to 1995, when he served as the Second Alternate to the Governor at the European Monetary Institute, at a time when the architecture of Eurosystem was being designed.
In the past, he advised two private banking groups in Greece. At National Bank of Greece (1996-2000), he was Chief Economist and helped establish the risk management division, the asset –liability management unit and investor relations. At Eurobank, he was Chief Economist, established the Research department and was a member of the Executive Committee. Hardouvelis has also served in the Board of the Athens Derivatives Exchange during its formation period, and in the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Economic & Industrial Research, and has been the President of the Academic Council of the Hellenic Bank Assoc. as well as an EMAC Representative.
His academic work is published in several internationally renowned economic journals, including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Monetary Economics, the Review of Economic and Statistics and others. He was included in the Hall of Fame of the top-50 individual publishers worldwide in applied econometrics over the period 1989 to 1995. (See p. 432, in Badi H.
