Lucas Papademos

Former Prime Minister of Greece, Vice-President of the Academy of Athens

Lucas Papademos is Vice-President of the Academy of Athens and holder of the Chair in Economic Sciences. He is Senior Fellow at the Center for Financial Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt. He served as Prime Minister of Greece from 2011 to 2012, leading a government of national unity during a critical phase of the Greek debt and economic crisis.

Previously, he was the Vice-President of the European Central Bank (2002-2010) and the Governor of the Bank of Greece (1994-2002). Before being appointed Governor, he held several senior positions at the Bank of Greece, including that of chief economist (1985-1993). Earlier, he served as a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

Papademos has been on the faculty of Columbia University (1975-1984), the University of Athens (1988-2014) and the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (2011-2013). He has been a member of many boards, councils and committees, including the Executive Board and the Governing Council of the ECB, the Steering Committee of the Financial Stability Board, the EU Economic and Financial Committee, and the Trilateral Commission.

He has published numerous articles in the fields of macroeconomics, financial markets and monetary policy as well as on subjects concerning economic performance and financial stability in the European Union. He holds a BS, an MS and a PhD, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
